Hi to all,

I post this thread, cause in last few years some countries stars anew laws, where betting is not legal. I know that in USA, most European bookmakers are illegal and there a few bookmakers from USA that accept bets, but are regulated from the government of USA. USA makes it illegal to operate a scheme except for in a few states. In many European nations bookmaking is regulated but not criminalized.

If somebody know in which country bookmakers are leagal or illegal will be helpful info for all members.

My info is that in Malta, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, Macedonia at the moment all bookmakers are legal and everybody can open an account and bet everywhere he wants, but last year Bulgarian government says that more than 700 mln. euro are gone from this country and there is no taxes paid for this and may be soon there will be new law for betting. In Poland i know that its not possible to bet in most bookmakers. In Holland 2,3 leaders bookmakers are gone too, cause dont recieve a documents for betting in this country. On March 5, 2009, France proposed new laws to regulate and tax Internet gambling. Budget minister Eric Woerth stated the French gambling market would expand to adapt to "Internet reality." He further stated "Rather than banning 25,000 websites, we'd rather give licenses to those who will respect public and social order." The new regulations take effect in June 2010. Betting exchanges, however, will remain illegal under the new plans. There will be new laws for betting in CZ Republic and may be in Hungary. Russian legislation, enacted in December 2006, prohibits online gambling altogether. In Turkey is not possible to bet. What about your country?

thanks

Here is a list of specific countries in which online gambling, or
gambling in general, has been specifically outlawed:

1. United States
2. China
3. Hong Kong
4. Cyprus
5. Greece
6. The Netherlands

Norway and Israel have been thinking of instituting a ban, and
Australia has banned future companies from forming or locating there
and their residents from gambling. Some companies locate there under
provincial rules; however, they can't market to Australian residents.

Mainland China and Cyprus are rethinking their
laws and are contemplating changing them so as to make gambling legal.

In Canada, it is illegal to set up a site but individual users' laws
are left to the provinces. Some provinces and tribes have become
places for online gambling websites to locate themselves, as you can
see in places such as the Kahnawake tribe in the above listing.

In France, online companies cannot be located in the country, but
French people are allowed to bet on sites.

Notably, "sharia" law from the Koran states that gambling is
unacceptable. Muslim countries that practice sharia law as part of
their government, therefore, do not allow gambling of any
circumstances. I have included these countries above. Turkey is
officially a secular government but has taken actions against
gamblers; however, if they join the European Union, they may have to
loosen these laws a bit. In any case, they are certainly not as strict
as many other Islamic nations are.

Overall, there are many different levels of legality involved with
these countries-- some outlaw sites while allowing users to gamble,
while some encourage sites but outlaw gamblers. The laws are often
contradictory and sometimes don't make sense. Many times, it's simply
a legal gray area where there is no direct legislation. In most
countries, it is not that it is outlawed; it's simply that there are
no rules to govern it.
